Make-up company: You're ugly.
Audience: Excuse me.
Make-up company: You heard me, you're ugly.
Audience: I don't feel ugly. I don't think I'm ugly. As a matter of fact, I think I'm pretty good looking.
Make-up company: No you're ugly. You're ugly because you don't use our product!
Audience: I don't really think I need your product to be good looking.
Make-up company: Well you do. There is no other way to look good other than use our product.
Audience: I don't believe you.
Make-up company: It's the truth and you are ugly just for not believing it.
Audience: I'll think about it...
Make-up company: It's the truth. We know it because we have the standard of beauty and it requires you to use our product!
Audience: I just talked with your rival company. They said I need to use THEIR product to be beautiful.
Make-up company: Well they're wrong. Their product will just make you uglier!
Audience: How do I know you're right and not them? You still haven't even proven to me I'm ugly in the first place.
Make-up company: You're ugly because you don't use our product and all others are just paths to ugliness because they aren't ours!!!

Now, many of you reading that would notice right away that this is WRONG! You don't know the person I labeled as "audience" is pretty, ugly or whatever, but to push the product, the make-up company has to convince him/her that they are. This means having to diminish them and convince them that the only way to become beautiful and closer to perfection is to use their product and their product alone. We notice this type of sales pitch EASILY if it's in adds for products and we know all the really comes from it is poor self-esteem. However, there seems to be one area we don't notice it as much...

Religion: You're evil.
Audience: Excuse me.
Religion: You heard me, you're evil.
Audience: I don't feel evil. I don't think I'm evil. As a matter of fact, I think I'm a pretty good person.
Religion: No you're evil. You're evil because you don't follow our teachings!
Audience: I don't really think I need your teachings to be a good person.
Religion: Well you do. There is no other way to be good other than to follow us.
Audience: I don't believe you.
Religion: It's the truth and you are evil just for not believing it.
Audience: I'll think about it...
Religion: It's the truth. We know it because we have the standards of morals and it requires you to use our product!
Audience: I just talked with people from another religion. They said I need to use THEIR teachings to be good.
Religion: Well they're wrong. Their teachings will just lead to the devil!
Audience: How do I know you're right and not them? You still haven't even proven to me I'm evil in the first place.
Religion: You're evil because you don't follow us and all other religions are just paths to the devil because they aren't ours!!!

It's the process of telling you that you've got a disease you weren't aware of and selling you the cure. Why is it that, as a society, we are against advertising of products in this manner because we know it only hurts people, but with religion it's perfectly OK for someone to say this. I see no difference and I don't think either are acceptable.
